I Survived

i thought i’d be

trapped in this

prison

forever.

i thought

i would never truly

know what it’s like

to experience

colour again

or feel

self-love flow through

my veins instead of

this Poison

i sip.

alas, i was

wrong;

through my mistakes

i learned how to

rise from the ashes

of the scorching looks

of judgement

that passes from

your

eyes.

i learned to swallow

the guilt

and in doing

so baptise

myself in the

present;

i found how to breathe

whilst drowning in

an empty mind

overflowing with hatred;

i saw beyond

the future my

broken heart

projected.

oh i didn’t just learn;

i survived.

A/N thank you to A, for giving me the prompt of growth. What was your favourite line? Got suggestions for the next poem? Come on, let’s chat in the comments below!

    – I’ve just recently come out of a dark period of my life and this is exactly how I felt! Numb and emotionless, yet now I can enjoy life’s colours once again! Beautiful poem! The last two lines are amazing!
